In the summer of my sophomore year of college, I received an unexpected email inviting me to interview for a company I never thought I would work for—a social media influencer. Earlier that month, I had applied for an internship matching program through my school, and I was told it could take weeks to get matched with an employer. As April rolled on, most of my friends had already secured internships, while I anxiously waited.


Then, in mid-May, I was invited to interview with an influencer. While the opportunity sounded exciting (let’s be honest, how often do you meet someone whose job revolves around social media?), I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had experience running social media for high school clubs and college organizations, so I thought I knew everything there was to know.


I was wrong.


After a successful interview, I received an offer that same day. Over the next 10 weeks, I realized that social media is far more complex than simply posting graphics and following trends. Here are the five biggest lessons I learned while working for an influencer.


1. Lighting and Audio Can Make or Break Content

People are naturally drawn to high-quality visuals and crisp audio.

If a video has poor lighting—whether it's too dark or overexposed—it makes viewers uncomfortable, and they are more likely to scroll away. The same goes for sound. Poor audio quality instantly reduces engagement because viewers won’t stick around for content they can’t clearly hear.


The first few seconds of a video are crucial. If your content doesn't hook the audience immediately, they’ll leave. This is especially important for platforms like YouTube, where audience retention directly impacts how often your videos are recommended by the algorithm.


2. People Have Short Attention Spans—Fast-Paced Content Wins

Social media has dramatically shortened our ability to focus.

On platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts, creators strategically use rapid scene changes every 2-3 seconds to keep viewers engaged. Background music, animations, and on-screen text all contribute to making content more dynamic and watchable.


Slow, static content doesn’t perform well. If you want your content to succeed, you have to keep it visually stimulating and fast-paced.


3. Analytics Are the Key to Success

Before my internship, I never realized how crucial data was to content strategy.

Every platform provides insights on engagement, reach, and performance, but the real skill is knowing which metrics matter.

For instance:

  • YouTube: Audience retention is key. The longer people watch your videos, the better they perform.

  • Instagram & Facebook (Meta): Engagement is everything. The more likes, shares, and comments a post gets, the more likely the algorithm is to recommend it.

Low-performing posts are just as valuable as high-performing ones. Understanding what doesn’t work helps refine future content strategies, ensuring you maximize reach and engagement.


4. Social Media is Entertainment—Not Just Information

Before my internship, I ran social media accounts for organizations that had never established a digital presence. I posted once a week, saw little engagement, and couldn’t understand why.


Looking back, I now realize that my content was aesthetically pleasing but had no entertainment value.

People don’t engage with posts that feel stale or uninteresting.

Successful content is either entertaining, informative, or emotionally compelling—and ideally, a mix of all three.


To thrive on social media:

  • Make content people actually want to consume.

  • Add humor, storytelling, or emotional appeal.

Posting content is just the beginning. You also need to:

  • Engage with your audience.

  • Analyze performance data.

  • Plan and create new content daily.


Many influencers post at least 2-3 times a week to maintain visibility. This keeps them active in the eyes of both the algorithm and their followers without experiencing burnout.
